More security for Christmas markets

The German government has announced that security will be stepped up at its Christmas markets.

The decision was made in light of the terror attacks in Paris on November 13 and heightened tensions across Europe.

Festive markets in cities across Germany are hugely popular with overseas visitors, including British holidaymakers.

Germany said it will also beef up security at public buildings and other major events.

The police presence will be increased and individual markets will hire additional security staff.
