“It can quickly become violent”

The unrest in Turkey has spread from Istanbul to several cities and resort areas in the south, where there have been several violent riots, arson, vandalism, tear gas and stone’s throw between Turks and Kurds in the Turkish holiday paradise Alanya.

“They threw stones and there was tear gas. There was uproar, and there was panic at the restaurant. There were children who were out on the floor in the kitchen and were told that they had to be lying in coverage.

We have come here very often, and we have never experienced something like this, “says Stine Wirenfeldt Meyer, Denmark, to danish newspaper BT.

Christer, Norwegian tourist in Alanya, went out to eat at a restaurant when the unrest began. Suddenly protesters invaded the site and one of them threw a stone that hit Christer in the head.

“We got people evacuated out in the restrooms at the back of the restaurant,” he told Norwegian TV 2.

“We went into a cloud of tear gas,” says Swedish Julia Tang, 24, on holiday in Alanya.

“Yesterday disturbances erupted in connection with demonstrations held both in Alanya and Side. We recommend our guests to exercise caution in the area around the demonstrations, which can rapidly degenerate into violence, “wrote Ving Sweden to its 3800 guests on Turkey’s resorts.

“There is a tense situation in Turkey right now. Foreign Ministry calls on Swedish travelers to be vigilant and cautious, especially in public places, in and around public buildings and other places with large crowds. The security situation has deteriorated. We encourage Swedes to avoid crowds and demonstrations. It can quickly become violent,” says Johan Brick, Press Officer, Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Stockholm, to TTO Scandinavia.

“Will Ministry for Foreign Affairs advise guests not to travel to the resort areas?

“We are making an overall assessment by the day. We do not recommend not traveling to Turkey. The Embassy’s advice is continuously updated as the situation changes. ”

“How many Swedes are currently on holiday resorts in Turkey?

“We estimate that at any given time (during peak season) is around 35 000 Swedes in Turkey, “says Johan Brick, Press Officer, Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Stockholm.

Daily contact

“Will Ving continue to fly to Turkey?”

“Yes, we always follow the Ministry’s recommendations and the Foreign Ministry do not advise not to travel to our destinations. We are following developments closely and are in daily contact with our staff in place as well as regular meetings with the Foreign Ministry, “says Magdalena Öhrn, Communications, Wing, Sweden.”

“Have Ving pulled some guests home or moved guests? “

“No, in the current situation there is nothing to suggest that the Foreign Ministry would change its travel recommendations. If the Foreign Ministry against expectations change their guidance, Ving will transport guests home and cancel future trips,” says Magdalena Öhrn.

On Star Tours Scandinavian Facebook pages tourists have expressed their concern about the situation. But if you ask Mathias Bergendahl, one can safely take in the city again.

“We are not concerned about further riots. There is generally nothing to worry about. Yesterday’s riot was an isolated incident, “says Mathias Bergendahl, Nordic Information Officer, Star Tour and Fritidsresorgruppen. Star Tour currently has around 1,500 Danes in Alanya.

“We are looking seriously at what happens to closely monitoring the situation. I have talked to our people on the ground and everything is calm on the resorts. Apollo Denmark has 350 guests at the resorts in Turkey.

We will continue to fly to Turkey to the end of the season last week in October unless there are dramatic changes, “says Glenn Bisgaard, Information Officer, Apollo Denmark.

“We’ve had inquiries from guests both in Turkey and guests from Denmark, who will be visiting Turkey. But we have not received any cancellations or people who have asked to come home, “says Glenn Bisgaard.
