Phuket out – Bali in

Miami and Phuket have dropped off the top five long-haul destinations list for summer 2017 holidays as consumers look to stay closer to home, according to a new survey.

Sojern, a performance marketing platform for travel brands, said there was a trend for holidaymakers in Europe and North America to look for shorter, more local trips this spring, possibly as a result of Brexit and the US travel bans. It analysed data from 350 million traveller profiles, including search and bookings from online and mobile channels, and found European travellers were more keen to travel to the Middle East and North Africa, particularly Marrakech and Bali, this summer.

European destinations like London, Barcelona, Palma and Lisbon have emerged as favourites for June breaks. “We are seeing an emerging trend of European travellers showing intent to travel to long-haul destinations such as Marrakech and Denpasar this summer, both of which are featured in the top five destinations,” said Sojern senior sales director Spencer Davies. “It seems that European travellers are keen to get away early this year with the top three departure dates being June 1, 2 and 3.”
